Name of Organisation : swach

Sector : waste management + Livelihood

About :

SWaCH is a cooperative wholly owned by waste pickers. The cooperative was formed when there was a need for a private, public partnership and the Pune Municipal Corporation was looking for a way to integrate waste pickers into the formal Solid waste management system.

Requirement :

Product Design, Communication Design

One of the main challenges that waste pickers face is the lack of sorting space. Waste will fetch more if it is segregated better.  While the PMC is expected to provide sheds within a kilometre from where the waste pickers work, it rarely happens that way as often residents object to it or there is no convenient spot etc.

Sorting sheds are an important part of decentralised waste management and help in increasing the amount that can be sent to recycling. They allow for fine sorting of recyclable waste into over 40 different categories of recyclables which is necessary for recycling. Thus, they reduce the pressure on PMC and the environment. Without sorting, a large number of recyclables end up in the landfill and precious resources are lost. Each waste picker needs about 70-90 sq. feet to sort and store about 3 days worth of waste, so that it becomes viable for them to transport it to the next level in the recycling chain.

SWaCH has also designed several individual sorting shed models which have worked in the past. However there is always room for improvement and efforts are still on. They are open to students in design schools come up with designs for such sheds. They can be small and compact and should provide some protection from the elements as well as be safe stores/lockable for sorted resalable materials like plastic, paper, metal etc.

They also need to communicate to all stake holders how important sorting sheds are and design for such communication needs is also one aspect.

Can be remote with frequent visits to the office.

Name of Organisation : Adventures beyond barriers foundation

Sector : disability

About :

Adventures Beyond Barriers Foundation (ABBF) is a not for profit organisation that promotes inclusivity. Through adaptive adventure and sports activities, we provide opportunities for people (with and without disability) to come together and experience the adrenaline and camaraderie that only sport has to offer. By spending time outdoors together, we hope to achieve two things –

1. Spread awareness that the spirit of adventure is not impeded by disability
2. Ward off common misconceptions about disability that stem from ignorance and feed popular social stereotypes.

ABBF was founded by Divyanshu Ganatra - a clinical psychologist and corporate facilitator by profession, adventure sportsperson by passion and a self-made social entrepreneur. He also happens to be India's first blind solo paragliding pilot.

Through our outdoor sessions and collaborations, we aim to provide more visibility for people with disability, promoting an environment of openness, sensitivity and empathy. Currently we participate in a range of adventure activities including marathons and running events, tandem cycling, scuba diving, paragliding, trekking and mountaineering. Watch their video here.

Name of Organisation : aks foundation

Sector : gender based violence

About :

Aks Foundation is registered under the Societies Registration Act 1860 (Central) and under the Maharashtra Public Trusts Act 1950. Aks Foundation is a Pune centric organisation working to combat gender based violence, primarily domestic violence and sexual assault. We provide support to victims of abuse and violence in order to empower them to become survivors.

On 15 August 2013, Aks Foundation launched 24 hour crisis lines for victims of abuse and violence. Aks provides advocacy and has assisted survivors by accompanying them to police stations, Mahila Sahay Kaksha. Aks has further provided legal assistance and counselling to many callers including providing lawyers on a pro bono basis in cases where survivors wanted to file under the DV act. Aks has built relationships with law enforcement agencies and other NGOs to provide holistic support to our survivors in Pune. For callers outside Pune, Aks has built networks of lawyers in Delhi and Mumbai and also tries to work with NGOs across the country to provide assistance.

Through its Community Education Program Aks conducts programs, talks and educational workshops to bring about greater awareness regarding the grave issues related to gender based discrimination and abuse and has been instrumental in raising a voice against the social evil of violence against women and children. Aks does an event every year called Take Back the Night, that urges survivors to speak up against abuse and share their stories. The primary aim of Take back the Night is to raise awareness about sexual abuse and to reclaim the night for women and children through art, poetry and music. Aks started its community awareness programs in 2013 and has done many sessions across 10 educational institutions. Awareness programs target both boys and girls and focus on issues related to gender, consent, legal rights of women and education around POCSO (Protection of Children Against Sexual Offences). The Director of Aks, Barkha Bajaj also sits on sexual harassment boards of companies (POSH) and has provided gender sensitisation programmes in corporates and with drivers and security personnel of one of the corporates.

Name of Organisation : sunrise community centre

Sector : education equity

About :

Sunrise EMS is a low income private school located in Kharadi, Pune. Teach for India has been associated with the school since 2010. In 2013, the fellows felt the need to spend more time with the students outside of school. This lead to the founding of our community centre. The Sunrise Community Centre is a space used by TFI fellows and their students after school. Currently, there are up to 100 children are at the community centre from 12:30pm to 7:00pm.
We have a Governing Body which runs the centre. This body comprises students and parents.

Requirement :

Brand Strategy + Communication Design

One of the things they’ve been working on is designing a communications plan for our centre. The purpose of the communication plan is to inform our stakeholders at regular intervals of the progress being made by the students and the fellows at the community centre. The stakeholders that they are looking to target through their communication plan are donors, parents, and the school staff.

As a part of this communication plan, they want to work on representing the progress being made my fellows and students visually. By visually, we mean the data should be accessible by anyone regardless of their literacy levels and language preference. This project will involve working closely with the student, TFI fellows, parents and school staff. To enable the creation of the communication plan, they are looking to have the designer spend the entire academic year 2017-2018 with us.

Name of Organisation : Marbles Lost & Found

Sector : Mental Health

About :

Marbles: Lost & Found is an initiative to raise awareness about mental health and its importance in our day to day lives. We go to our GP when we’ve got the flu, we go to the dentist for our cavities, but as soon as we feel the need to go to a mental health professional, everyone…well…loses their marbles. We want everyone to know that mental health care, just like physical health care, is actually normal. There’s no need for whispers, for shifting eyes, or for silence! It’s okay to not feel okay, you aren’t alone…in fact you’d be surprised how many people feel the way you feel. We’re going to talk about it and challenge that stigma to empower each and every one of us, even when we feel completely lost, to feel safe and strong enough to speak out.

Requirement :

Illustration + Communication Design

Looking for collaborators for their Facebook page. Whether you're an illustrator, an artist, a writer, a poet, a designer, or a vlogger, Marbles is looking for people with interesting ideas to help create engaging content for their mental health page. They want to tackle the subject in a light-hearted and tongue-in-cheek sort of way -- think of comics like Sarah Andersen, Owturd, and Hyperbole and a Half -- so if you're interested and have something to say, they look forward to hearing from you!

Remote/Onsite:

Remote. Might require one/two visits to Bombay.
