A Lack of Equity
In an ideal world, there is equity amongst everyone, irrespective of their gender. Sadly, that is far from the truth.
In India, there are approximately 230 million boys under the age of 18. It is estimated that as adults — 57% justify violence against women , 50% will or are likely to use physical violence and 25% will or are likely to be involved in rape. But, this violence is only the tip of the iceberg; many more men will perpetrate more subtle forms of violence, including financial, emotional and verbal violence . This violence is an emerging epidemic that must be prevented.
Very few organisations focused on these issues run programmes that seek outcomes in boys’ knowledge and behaviours consistent with gender equality . Enter Equal Community Foundation, an organisation that aims at preventing gender-based violence violence and discrimination in the community, by raising awareness and developing understanding among adolescent boys about the fact that equitable gender norms are possible.
